Monitoring a HAB flight: OK1LPD-11

I spent a few hours online today monitoring a HAB flight in Czech Republic.

I ran a flight prediction on habhub.org, and then compared actual flight path vs predicted flight path by monitoring live APRS info on aprs.fi.

A few pictures and screen caps:

Monitoring setup at my tracking station.  Minimal setup/effort today as I was busy with other stuff in the background.20150606110222_

Flight Path Forecast

The latest flight path forecast:

Flight Path Forecast

The current flight path forecast looks good, seems like we wouldn’t have to chase too far. Forecasts from Wednesday onwards should be quite accurate, so we’ll keep a close eye on it.

Meanwhile many preparations are taking place, like packing of equipment, final software tweaks, final payload assemblies and many other things that we have to do. More info & images to follow as we make progress!

Things to listen to…

There are many signals coming from satellites which we can listen to daily. Sites like heavens-above.com provide info on which satellites will be overhead and when. With a simple USB receiver (RTL2830 USB stick receivers, available for cheap on the net) and some free software, it is easy to decode much of what is transmitted from space.

Flight Map

Due to the early deploying of the main chute, the payload covered quite a distance before touching down.
